Gene O'Brien graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1943. As a student, O'Brien was named All-Conference as a center (1941) and was co-captain of the football team (1942). He was a member of the conference champion teams of 1941 and 194. The football team went 10-0 in the MIAC, 15-1 overall in O'Brien's last two seasons.
