Points of Pride

  • Won three of the last four MIAC team championships
  • Seven NCAA top-20 team finishes since 2012
  • Two recent team titles in the elite national fall Golfweek tournament
  • Four MIAC meet medalists in last 10 seasons
  • Nine All-America honors since 2011, led by three-time honoree Emmet Herb (2017-20)
  • Nationally ranked for most of the 2011-2021 era

In fall 2021 St. Thomas becomes the first institution to make a direct move in all sports from NCAA D-III into D-I athletics.

Tommie Men's Golf is one of 18 sports that will compete in the Summit League. St. Thomas teams will also compete in the Pioneer Football League; the WCHA Women’s Hockey league; and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association for men’s hockey.

The Tommies closed out the MIAC and D-III chapters with several top achievements in 2020-21:

  • St. Thomas placed eighth out of 37 in the 72-hole NCAA Championship tournament
  • They were ranked in the top 25 nationally all season
  • They placed second in the conference meet
  • Three Toms made the 16-player All-Region team: junior Ben Frazzini, junior Cole Nasby and freshman Matt Armstrong

Team members play both a fall and spring schedule. The Tommies face a variety of challenging courses in the Twin Cities and throughout Minnesota for practices and tournaments. The Tommies also travel to the southern United States for a spring trip.

St. Thomas' Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex (AARC) includes a golf room with a state-of-the-art golf simulator for offseason training.

Division III Era

As a Division III school, several recent Tommie teams have been ranked in the top 25 nationally, including seven top-20 NCAA team finishes from 2011-2021.

Scott Proshek was among a select group of six finalists for 2017-18 National Coach of the Year.

On the conference scene, St. Thomas has finished in the top four in the team race in 12 times, including eight top-two places from 2009-2021.

Recent Success

The 2019-20 Purple won the 54-hole MIAC tournament and was ranked No. 6 nationally when the season was ended in March by the Covid-19 outbreak. Senior Emmet Herb won his third career All-America honor.

The 2018-19 Tommies won the 54-hole MIAC tournament and took 15th place at nationals. Junior Emmet Herb won his second career All-America honor. The previous spring, Herb was named MIAC Player of the Year with the lowest stroke average, led by five rounds of 70 or better.

The 2017-18 Tommies won the elite 18-team Golfweek Preview Tournament in October 2017 for the second time in three years. That helped the Tommies rank No. 1 in Division III in the GolfStat computer rankings and No. 3 in the coaches' poll for most of the winter and spring.

St. Thomas also won the MIAC championship and tied for 11th out of 42 teams at the May 2018 national tournament.

Senior Pete Sienko shot a seven-under 65 in an April 2018 round -- the best score by a Tommie in 13 seasons.

In 2015-16, the Tommies received an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships after finishing one stroke out of first place at the MIAC Championships. St. Thomas tied for fifth place at nationals -- a program best -- and were led by Jack Riester and Pete Sienko, who tied for 16th.

The 2014-15 team advanced to the NCAA Championships for the third time in four seasons and finished 12th out of 41 teams. Alex Kapraun tied for 13th at nationals and was named to the Capital One Academic All-America team for the second straight year.

In June 2014, Kapraun capped his junior year by being voted to the Capital One Academic All-America team.

In 2012-2013, the Tommies finished second at the conference meet and were awarded an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships. The team missed the cut after finishing 19th out of the 41 participating teams. Alex Kapraun repeated as an All-America after finishing 27th individually at nationals.

St. Thomas had a breakthrough season in 2011-12 as it won the conference title -- the school's first in 31 seasons -- and advanced to the NCAA Championships. Freshman Alex Kapraun was MIAC meet co-medalist and went on to earn All-America honors after finishing 14th at nationals.

In 2010 Scott Proshek was elevated to Tommie head coach. Proshek, a Tommie assistant coach since 2006, replaced Dave Lepp, who resigned after four seasons due to additional duties as UST's athletic facilities manager. Proshek was the general manager at the New Prague Golf Club for 25 years and retired in 2004. He works at Brackett's Crossing Golf Club in Lakeville.

In 2008, Ben Jensen and John Treacy received Division III National Scholar Athlete awards. Michael Mortenson has gained that same academic honor in both 2010 and 2011 and received the NCAA Elite 89 honor in 2012 with the best grade-point average among more than 200 competitors at D-III nationals.

In June 2007, John Treacy broke the course record at St. Paul's Como GC with a 9-under 61.

In 2005, Mark Hadley shot a 64 in a spring tournament. That’s believed to be the lowest score in a competitive round in conference history.

In 2001-02, senior Tom Wroblewski posted the lowest MIAC Championships 36-hole score in at least 25 years when he shot 140 on the tough Bunker Hills course to capture medalist honors. Wroblewski topped a 50-player field with rounds of 69 and 71 for a 140 total. Wroblewski beat the runner-up by four strokes and the third-place finisher by eight strokes.
