Women’s Hockey travels to Wisconsin for WCHA Quarterfinals

The Tommies will play a best-of-three series against the Badgers in the first round of WCHA Playoffs

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team faces Wisconsin in the first round of WCHA Playoffs. Puck drop is set for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3 if necessary.

Last Time Out
Last weekend, St. Thomas closed the regular season with a home-and-home against Minnesota State.
 
On Friday, the St. Thomas Women's Hockey team earned their first road win of the season and first conference win against Minnesota State, 3-2.
 
On Saturday, the Tommies secured their first WCHA sweep of the season, defeating the Mavericks 4-3 in overtime.
 
Rylee Bartz scored the game-winner in both games, while Calla Frank helped St. Thomas to two wins this weekend.
 
With the two wins, the Tommies passed their DI-record of single season wins and moved into seventh place in the WCHA standings.
 
Scouting the Badgers
The No. 2-ranked Wisconsin Badgers (29-5-0, 23-5-0 WCHA) finished the regular season defeating the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday night, 4-2.
 
Sophomore, Kirsten Simms currently leads the nation in points per game, averaging 1.91 PPG. Simms leads the Badgers with 61 points (27G, 34A) in 32 games played.
 
Goaltenders Ava McNaughton and Jane Gervais have played significant minutes for Wisconsin this season. The duo has combined for 10 shutouts, .930 SV%, and 1.47 GAA.
 
Milestones
· Juniors Abby Promersberger, Maddie Jurgensen and Maddy Clough have all reached 100 games played in Purple.
· Allie Monrean hit the 100 DI games played milestone against the Minnesota Duluth, and set a new program record in total games played for St. Thomas, skating in 138 games.
·Calla Frank  recorded her 2000th career save against Ohio State on Saturday. Frank closed that game with a Tommie career high 49 saves.
 
Record Breakers
The Tommies have set a DI era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 17 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshman Ella Boerger, who has found the back of the net 11 times. Boerger's 11 goals have also set a record of goals scored in a single season.
 
In 35 games played, Boerger (11G, 13A – 24P), Bartz (10G, 13A – 30P), Nicole Vallario (5G, 10A – 15P), and Maddie Brown (6G, 8A - 14P) have passed the DI single season record in points scored for the Tommies.  The previous record was 13 total points set by Maddy Clough (2022-23 season) and Abby Promersberger (2021-22 season).
 
Bartz, Boerger, Vallario and Maddy Clough have also surpassed the single season record in assists (previously 8), and Bartz has tied record for power play goals scored in a single season (3).  
 
Offensive Growth
The Tommies have scored 71 goals throughout 35 games of the 2023-24 season, while the Purple totaled 53 through 36 games just last season.
 
The Purple faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce, Lindenwood, Cornell and Harvard. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot non-conference opponents 225-115 and outscored opponents 25-16.   
 
This season, the Tommies have scored 14 power play goals. Last season the Tommies scored eight on the power play, and recorded 11 with the player advantage during the in 2021-22 season.
 
D-Side
The purple defense continues to make an impact not only in the defensive zone, but offensively as well. Junior defender, Nicole Vallario has recorded career-high 14 points (5G, 10A) in 35 games played.
 
Junior captain, Maddy Clough leads the Tommies both on and off the ice. Clough has totaled 10 points (1G, 9A) and recorded the shootout winner over Bemidji State on Jan. 26.
   
Defensively, Ellah Hause leads the team and ranks 4th in the WCHA in blocked shots, blocking 62 shots in 35 games played.
