Falcon Heights, Minn. - Tommie senior Colton Halla kicked home to a five-second victory in a field of 29 runners Friday at the season-opening University of Minnesota Oz Memorial Race at the Bolstad Gold Course. The race was held on a warm evening with temperatures in the mid-80s.
The host Gophers scored 20 points with a tight lead pack that bunched six runners within three seconds with a 2-3-4-5-6-7 individual finish.
St. Thomas put five runners in the top 12 and scored 40. Drake had a partial squad and scored 82.
Halla clocked 19:34 for the 3.73-mile (6,000 meter) race, five seconds ahead of Minnesota freshman Emmet Anderson.
This was Halla's first college cross country victory. In 2021 he placed eighth out of 62 runners at the Summit League championship race to help the Toms place second out of eight teams.
Zach Haire placed ninth in 19:43; Charlie Caven took 11th in 19:52; freshman Caden Nordberg placed 12th in 20:04; Morey Smith placed 16th in 20:17; Adam McCollor took 20th in 20:22; Harris Anderson placed 22nd in 20:29; and freshman Sean McNiesh took 23rd in 20:33.
Coach Pete Wareham said it was a good opportunity for his athletes to get an early competition against some strong runners as they look ahead to their closing four meets in 2022.
St. Thomas will return to the Bolstad course Sept. 23 for the 8,000-meter Roy Griak Invite.
