NFL free agent tight end and St. Thomas Football alum Nick Guggemos has been added to the Cleveland Browns practice squad.
The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Guggemos was in summer camps with two other NFL teams earlier this summer -- a four-week stint with Seattle, and a three-week period with Washington.
Guggemos was slowed by injuries during his St. Thomas career, from 2014-18. He was a wide receiver and long jumper for the Tommies in his era here after playing high school football nearby at Benilde-St. Margaret's.
Cleveland's roster has been disrupted with injuries and Covid issues. Heading into today's game with Las Vegas, the Browns are carrying three tight ends on their active roster with Guggemnos the lone player at that position currently on the practice squad. One tight end is on the Browns' Practice Squad/Covid list, and one other tight end sits on the Reserve/Covid list.
While several Tommies have had rookie camp tryouts with NFL teams, Guggemos is the first St. Thomas alum to make an NFL practice squad or regular-season roster since Ryan Collins, who played in four games with the Baltimore Ravens in 1999 before suffering an injury.
Nick's dad, Neal Guggemos, played as a defensive back and kick returner with the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants during the late 1980s after a record-setting career with St. Thomas.

Spring 2021 Opportunity

Seattle web reporter Ty Gonzalez reported last summer that Guggemos was out of football for three years before impressing scouts last April:
"Following a three-year hiatus from football, Guggemos put his skills on display for scouts at Minnesota's pro day in early April. Taking things a step further (he) recorded his own pro day in which he posted a stellar 4.49-second 40-yard dash, 6.93-second 3-cone drill, and 4.12-second short shuttle.
Liking what they saw from that and the practice footage they had of Guggemos, the Seahawks invited him to their training facility for a private workout. There, he impressed coach Pete Carroll and his staff, earning an opportunity to join the team's 90-man roster.

"He did a nice job in a couple workouts that our scouts had seen," Carroll told reporters following voluntary organized team activities in late May. "Then when we brought him in here for a workout, he really did well and so, we thought he deserved a chance to be part of this."
