St. Thomas Women's Cross Country placed 26th of 32 teams at Saturday's NCAA Championships race in Winneconne, Wis. It was UST's second trip to nationals in as many seasons, as Coach Joe Sweeney's team placed 21st in 2014.
Senior Emily Gapinski placed 95th in a field 280 runners (22:19) to lead the Tommies.
Three other UST runners hit career-best times for 6,000 meters:
- junior Bridget McGivern was 139th (22:36);
- junior Alex Fossum was 148th (22:39);
- senior Megan Terukina placed 166th (22:46).
Junior Kayla Janto was 217th (23:08); soph Megan Gossfeld placed 233rd (23:14); and senior Diane Hubbell took 249th (23:24).
Carleton placed 17th and St. Olaf took 27th.
Women's Hockey
In a battle of March 2015 MIAC playoff finalists, St. Thomas Women's Hockey scored a 1-0 win over Bethel Saturday on home ice to claim three points of four on the weekend series. The teams played to a 2-2 tie Friday night in Blaine.
Karina Marette scored the game's only goal -- her sixth career game-winning goal -- in the first period. UST is now 13-1-1 in games in her career when Marette scores a goal.
Freshman Kenzie Torpy stopped all 23 shots in goal for her first collegiate shutout for the No. 3-ranked Tommies (4-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 MIAC).
Torpy had 20 saves in Friday's win, and helped kill off all four BU power plays on the weekend.
Men's Basketball
St. Thomas Men's Basketball used a late 17-7 run to pull away from a stubborn Southern Vermont team, 79-67, in Saturday's Hoopsville tournament in Baltimore.
The No. 4-ranked Tommies (3-0) shot 50.8 percent from the flor, had a 46-33 rebounding edge, and made nine 3-pointers.
Taylor Montero had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists; Ryan Saarela had 14 points and 13 rebounds; Cortez Tillman had 15 points and five assists; and Grant Shaeffer added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Women's Basketball
Junior center Kaitlin Langer had 27 points and 10 rebounds and UST converted 20-of 24 free-throw tries in Saturday night's 82-61 non-conference road win at Puget Sound.
The No. 1-ranked Tommies (4-0) have won four games in eight days to open the season. They shot 54 percent from the flor and had just 10 turnovers.
Gabby Zehrer had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists and Katie Stine chipped in 18 points and three steals.
Men's Swim-Dive
St. Thomas Men's Swimming and Diving won 11 of 16 events and outscored St. John's 189-107 in Saturday's dual meet in Collegeville.
UST's Andrew Grabowski swept the diving events, scoring 304.50 on three-meter and 282.80 on one meter. The Toms won the 400 medley (3:34.52) and 400 free (3:13.72) relays.
Other individual winners for St. Thomas were Josh Gerick in the 1000 free (10:26.91); Chris Tri in the 200 free (1:49.83); Eric Schuld in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.42); Brady Anderson in the 200 back (1:58.44); Alex Robb in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.45); David Brunik in the 500 free (5:06.62); and James Bussey in the 100 fly (53.95).
Women's Swim-Dive
St. Thomas Women's Swimming and Diving won 12 of 16 events and outscored St. Ben's 199-99 in Saturday's dual meet in Collegeville.
UST's Casey Nightingale won one-meter diving (236.50), and the Toms won the 400 medley (4:05.20) and 400 free (3:38.22) relays.
Individual pool winners for St. Thomas were Alex Howard in the 200 free (1:59.55); Kate Smarjesse in the 100 back (1:03.57); Melissa Rose in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.76); Katelyn Strauss in the 200 fly (2:12.67); Emma Paulson in the 50 free (24.22) and 200 back (2:05.55); Nicole Herrli in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.03); Haley Cassens in the 100 fly (1:02.56); and Courtney Grunewald in the 200 IM (2:18.45).
Men's Hockey
St. Thomas Men's Hockey had a four-game unbeaten streak halted with Saturday night's 2-1 road loss to Bethel.
Willie Faust tied the game with a third-period goal, assisted by Johnny Roisum. But BU answered mid-way through the period on Justin Bonanno's goal that proved to be the difference.
Joe Morris stopped 20 of 22 shots for UST (4-2-2 overall, 3-1 MIAC). UST maanged 26 shots on goal but couldn't get its offense in gear.
St. Thomas plays next Friday and Saturday in Utica, N.Y., against Oswego State and Utica.
