Rev. W. Joe Gibbs graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1913. As a student, Gibbs led the team to a 1912 MIAC championship and was named to the All-State football team as an end to his senior year. During his time at St. Thomas, Gibbs also played for the University's 1913 intercollegiate baseball championship winning team.
