Steve Fritz graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1971, then with an MA in 1978. As a student, Fritz was named to the All-District 13 team twice and to the All-MIAC squad three times. He was named the 1971 MIAC Basketball MVP and won the Mr. Tommy award. He played in two NAIA National Tournaments in Kansas City, adn his last two teams won conference titles and posted a record of 50-8 (30-2 in the MIAC). He held the single-game scoring record of 43 points, and still ranks second in career points (1,944) and third in rebounds (915) on the St. Thomas career list. After being inducted into the St. Thomas Athletics Hall of Fame, Fritz had 464 wins in the first 30 seasons as head basketball coach, with only one losing season, 15 MIAC titles, and 11 NCAA playoff trips. He was three-time Regional Coach of the Year and 14-time MIAC Coach of the Year. He is currently serving as the St. Thomas Athletic Director, and has been now for over 25 years.
