Richard Harkwell Jr. graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1988. As a student, Harkwell earned nine All-American honors in the 400 meter dash and in relay events. He was named the 1986 MIAC Championship meet MVP and helped St. Thomas to win all eight MIAC indoor and outdoor championships during his tenure. Harkwell broke the St. Thomas outdoor record in the 400 yard dash (47.66), holding that record for 17 years, and broke the St. Thomas indoor record in the 400 yard dash (48.99), holding that record for 13 years.
