- 1974
John Rigney graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1936. As a student, Rigney was named All-MIAC in basketball as a center (1934). He was noted for hitting a home run in nearly every St. Thomas baseball game in which he played. He pitched eight seasons of major-league baseball with the Chicago White Sox, and had his career interrupted by service with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He won the first ever night game played at Comiskey Park in 1939. His pro career record finished at 63-64 with 605 strikeouts and a 3.59 ERA in 197 games. He had an 11-inning complete-game 1-0 shutout of the Yankees in 1940. He later worked in the White Sox' front office and rose to the title of General Manager.
