Jim "Popcorn" Brandt graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1951. Brandt was the starting halfback on the Tommies' 1948 Championship Cigar Bowl team, during which he had an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown. Brandt was the starter on the undefeated MIAC winning football team in 1949, and went on to play three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he scored four NFL touchdowns. He was a member of the first induction class of the St. Thomas Athletics Hall of Fame.
