Gary Trettel graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1991. As a student, Trettel was a two-time All-American running back and kick returner (1989, 1990). He held the MIAC career rushing record for 12 years (3,724 yards), even after only playing three seasons. He still holds 20 St. THomas records, including touchdowns (45) and all-purpose yards (6,044). He had the school-record 47 rushing attempts twice in 1990. Trettel recorded 10 consecutive 100+ yard rushing games in 1990 and finished his career with 20 100+ yard games. He led the 1990 Tommies to the NCAA quarterfinals and the Tommies' first postseason win.
