Frank Deig graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1941. He served as the St. Thomas Athletic Director from 1945-1958. During that time, he also coached the football team, leading three state championship winning football teams (1948,1949, and 1957). Deig held the St. Thomas football record for most wins (56), and was the only coach to win four MIAC championships (1947,1948,1949, and 1956). He coached an unbeated, untied team to win the outright MIAC crown in 1956, when he was named the National Catholic Small College Coach of the Year. Deig was the coach of the legendary 1948 Cigar Bowl team, who finished the game in a 13-13 tie with the elite Missouri Valley. Deig is one of only two MIAC coaches since 1950 to beat St. John's four years in a row (1954-57).
