Back-to-back national championship teams that captured the first national titles in St. Thomas athletics history, winning the 1981 AIAW National Championship and the 1982 NCAA Division III National Championship… claimed the program's first MIAC women's cross country championship in 1982, launching a conference-record streak of nine consecutive league titles… established St. Thomas as a national power by posting a combined 17 team victories over the two seasons, including conference, regional and national championships… the 1981 national championship team featured three All-Americans in Debbie Thometz (first), Teresa Mayer (third) and Angie King (17th), while the 1982 NCAA championship team produced three more All-Americans in Thometz (second), Sarah Hintz (third) and Mayer (sixth)… coached by Joe Sweeney, these teams set a new standard of excellence for Tommie Athletics and laid the foundation for decades of success across the department.
