Men’s track & field duo become first in outdoor program history named to academic team
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- All-league members Mitchell Piehl and Jack Rosner represented St. Thomas track & field as selections to the 2024 Summit Outdoor Track & Field Academic All-League Team, the league announced Tuesday.
The selections are the first for the program outdoors while it previously featured two selections to the 2022-23 Summit Indoor Academic All-League Team. Rosner's 2024 academic team selection is the second of his career, also being named to the 2022-23 indoor academic all-league team.
Piehl, a native of Hutchinson, Minn., is a sophomore majoring in computer science. He was named Summit Outdoor All-League after finishing third in the 200-meter dash at the 2024 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships. His time of 21.35 is second in program history and ranks 29th in the region. Piehl nearly secured a second all-league selection with a fourth-place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 47.56, which ranks second in program history. He was also a member of two relays that set program records in the 4x100m relay and the distance medley relay.
Rosner, a native of De Pere, Wis., is a junior majoring in electrical engineering. He took second in the decathlon and third in the 110m hurdles, setting program records in both events, to earn two Summit Indoor All-League honors. Rosner ranks seventh in the region in the decathlon and 17th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.66, which ranks fourth in program history. Overall, he ranks among the top 50 in the region in six events during the outdoor season. Rosner is a six-time all-league selection between both indoor and outdoor, a two-time member of the Summit League Academic Honor Roll, a 2022-23 Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence honoree, and a 2022-23 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team selection. Rosner was also named the 2021-22 Summit League Indoor Newcomer of the Championship.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions.
Nominations are brought forth by sports information directors from the league's nine institutions that carry track and field, and voting is conducted by both the SIDs and facility athletic representatives (FARs). Each team is made up of the 15 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
