Sioux Falls, S.D. - For the second year in a row, St. Thomas has received the Summit League's Sportsmanship award. The Tommies are in season two of an unprecedented direct move in all sports from non-scholarship Division III into Division I play.

St. Thomas competes in 18 Summit League sports, and this season had top-six conference team finishes in 11 sports. That total included five top-four finishes: men's cross country (third); men's indoor and outdoor track (both fourth); men's basketball (tie for fourth); and women's cross country (fourth). The Toms also had a fifth-place outdoor track finish for the women; and sixth-place finishes in men's soccer and golf; softball; and men's and women's swim-dive.

The Tommies' successes were reflected in this year's Summit League Commissioner's Cup scoring over its debut year of 2021-22. The Purple closed 2022-23 in eighth place with 61 points -- just five points out of fifth place. The 2021-22 Toms totaled 49 points with an eighth-place finish in the Commissioner's Cup standings.

This school year, South Dakota State (104.5) nosed out North Dakota State (103.5) for first place, with South Dakota (93.5) close behind. Just 8.5 points separated the next five teams with Denver (69.5), North Dakota (66), Oral Roberts (66), Omaha (65.5) and St. Thomas (61) finishing fourth through eighth out of the league's 10 institutions.

In addition, St. Thomas finished fourth in the William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports Award race with 30.5 points -- a jump from the sixth-place showing of the previous year when the Purple men had 24 points. South Dakota State (41.5) topped North Dakota State (41) for the men's crown, followed closely by Oral Roberts (35), St. Thomas (30.5), South Dakota (30) and Denver (25) in spots No. 3 through No. 6.

On the women's side, the Tommies moved up one spot into eighth place in the Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Award standings with 30.5 points, up from 25 points in the previous school year. South Dakota (63.3) edged South Dakota State (63) and North Dakota State (62.5) for the victory, followed next by North Dakota (48), Omaha (47), Denver (44), Oral Roberts (31), St. Thomas (30.5) and Kansas City (26).
