Cross Country teams race Friday evening at U of M golf course

St. Paul, Minn. - Tommie Cross Country will send both squads to the University of Minnesota Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights Friday Sept. 2 for a season-opening Oz Memorial Race hosted by the Minnesota Gophers.
The men's 6,000-meter race starts at 6:30 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by the 6K women's race.
Minnesota, Drake and St. Thomas athletes will compete with a few Gopher unattached runners.

The Tommie men return their top seven runners from a Summit League runner-up team of 2021. Coach Pete Wareham's team was picked for third place in the 2022 Summit preseason poll of head coaches.
The Purple return four all-conference honorees: seniors Zach Haire (first team) Colton Halla and Biel Wiel, and junior Charlie Caven (all second team). Four other top performers return in senior Morey Smith, junior Harris Anderson, sophomore Tony Weeks and senior Adam McCollor. The Toms also brought in four promising freshmen expected to push for top-seven roles on the squad.
The St. Thomas women return six of their top performers from 2021, when they placed fourth out of nine teams in the conference meet. New coach Ashley Lucas has five freshmen on a roster of 30 athletes. The Purple were tabbed fifth in the Summit League preseason poll.
All-conference finisher Molly Desotell leads the returners. She placed 11th out of 75 runners at the conference meet in 22:05, the second freshman women's finisher. In all the Purple return six runners who placed in the top 61 at the Summit championship meet: Desotell; Ava Pankratz (33rd), Christina Bolcer (34th), Morgan Ede (47th), Gwen Helgeson (54th) and Caroline Johnson (61st).
