St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas Women's Cross Country has a new head coach, some new faces on its roster, and a couple of new stops on its schedule for 2022.

The Tommies start season two of D-I and Summit League competition and will be led by a new head coach. Ashley Lucas, whose eight-year D-I coaching career includes the last five seasons as head coach in cross country and track and field at Illinois-Chicago, takes over to lead the next chapter for the program.

St. Thomas is expected to return five of its top eight runners from the 2021 squad that placed fourth out of nine teams in the 2021 Summit League meet in Tulsa, led by rising sophomore Molly Desotell, who placed 11th out of 75 runners at the conference meet. The Purple are expected to have 15 seniors and juniors leading a 29-athlete roster.

Lucas replaces Joe Sweeney, who retired in June after a 42-year run leading Tommie women's distance runners as coach in cross country and track and field. St. Thomas is expected to return five of its top eight runners from the 2021 squad that placed fourth out of nine teams in its inaugural season in Division I's Summit League.

The Toms open the season Friday Sept. 2 at the University of Minnesota's Oz Memorial race.
