Volleyball gels late, makes playoff finals

On a night of momentum swings, Tommie Volleyball saved its best for last and pulled out a 3-1 victory over visiting St. Benedict. UST won 25-21-15-25, 25-23, 25-21 before a lively crowd of 330 at Schoenecker Arena.

The No. 8-ranked Tommies (23-6), the playoff No. 2-seed, advanced to Saturday's 5 p.m. final at top-seed Augsburg. The Auggies scored a 3-0 win over No. 4-seed St. Mary's.

Augsburg rallied to win 3-2 in the previous meetig this season, avenging two 2013 defeats to the Tommies.

This marks the fifth consecutive season UST has reached the conference playoff title match.

UST rallied from a 20-18 deficit in set one with 7-1 run to close out the set. The Toms also trailed 17-15 in the pivotal third set, but came back for a 25-23 win.

The Tommies led the fourth set 11-3, fell behind 20-17, then stormed back to score eight of the last nine points to close out the match victory.

The No. 22-ranked Blazers (21-9) had their six-match win streak halted.

UST has won 19 of its last 21 matches this season after a 4-4 start.

Senior All-America Jill Greenfield recorded her 66th career double-double with 18 digs and 14 kills and hit .282, while senior All-America Kelly Foley had 10 kills and hit .348.

Whitney Abrahamson added 25 digs. Kelly Biermann and Whitney Lloyd each had four blocks and five kills, and Sara Atkinson has six kills.
