Volleyball holds on, starts MIAC slate 1-0

Kelly Foley had 12 kills and four blocks and Jill Greenfield had 10 kills and 11 digs to lead No. 20-ranked St. Thomas to a 3-1 victory over visiting St. Mary's in MIAC volleyball action Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies prevailed in their home opener, 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22.

St. Thomas led 19-14 in the fourth set, but the Cardinals countered with five points to tie the game. SMU went ahead 21-20 in its bid to force a fifth set, but UST scored five of the last six points to close out the match victory.

UST (7-4 overall, 1-0 MIAC) has won 41 of its last 43 matches at home. The Toms hit .360 in winning the first two games but struggled with 16 hitting errors in the last two sets and hit just .207 on the match.

Sara Atkinson had seven kills and three blocks and hit .308; Whitney Abrahamson added 16 digs; and Maddie Reese had 25 assists.

For St. Mary's, Cassidy Bittle recorded 18 kills and Macki Fadness had 13 kills.

The Tommies compete this weekend at the UW-Eau Claire Invite, with two matches on Friday and two on Saturday.
