Senior RHP Sammy Hogan and junior 2B Melissa Barry on Monday were named MIAC Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week. The duo helped No. 14-ranked St. Thomas go 6-0 during a four-day span and surpass 20 wins on the season.
Hogan went 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA to help the Toms go 6-0 on the week and improve her own record to 6-2 on the spring. She came into Saturday's game one in the third inning of a 1-1 score at Augsburg and threw 4.2 shutout innings and added a solo HR in a 3-1 win. She had a six-inning shutout victory (8-0) in game two allowing three hits and no walks. Hogan had a 4-3 complete-game win over Carleton on Sunday night. She had 11 Ks and three walks over 18 innings in the weekend games.
Barry batted .526 (10-for-19) with seven runs scored and three stolen bases and helped the Toms to a 6-0 week. In Sunday's game two against Carleton, UST trailed 3-2 with one out in the fifth when Barry hit a sinking liner for a single that skipped past the center fielder and rolled to the fence. She came all the way around to score the tying run in an eventual 4-3 victory. She has reached base in 17 of the Toms' last 18 games, and UST is 17-1 in that span. She had no errors in 37 chances last week at second base.
In 12 MIAC games, Barry is batting .500 (19-of-38) with 14 runs, three walks, one HBP and three sacrifices with just one strikeout in 45 plate appearancs. She has just one error in 62 defensive chances in league games, and has only one error in her last 85 chances overall. She has 127 hits on her career.
St. Thomas is 58-16 in Hogan's two seasons with the team and 101-24 in Barry's three-year era.
The Tommies (21-5 overall, 11-1 MIAC) have five conference doubleheaders left and are looking to make it 15-for-15 all-time in MIAC playoff berths.
