It's postseason time for Tommie Men's Cross Country.
Coach Pete Wareham's runners, ranked 29th nationally, are set to compete with 10 other teams -- including No. 19-ranked St. Olaf, No. 30th ranked Carleton, and Gustavus -- when the conference meet is contested Saturday morning on the Carleton campus in Northfield.
The 8,000-meter race starts at 11 a.m., and precedes the noon women's 6,000-meter race.
St. Thomas finished third last season on the course at nearby St. Olaf College. The Toms return seven runners that placed in the top 45.
Three seniors are in the top six this season:
- Karl Wachter has placed 94th, 13th and fourth in his first three conference meets. The Shakopee native has been the team's top finisher in 14 of his last 15 cross country races. He placed 76th out of 308 runners at nationals last November to lead the Purple to a 30th-place team finish.
- Collin Kiley has placed 65th, 39th and 37th in his first three conference meets.
- George McGivern has placed 103rd, 80th and 44th in his first three conference meets but has enjoyed a breakthrough in 2019. McGivern is one of just three returning runners to place in the top eight in both the 5,000 and 10,000 last May at the MIAC outdoor track meet.
Junior Carl Kozlowski (14th in 2018) and sophomores Biel Wiel (24th) and Mac Karrick (13th) also return after top-25 placings at the 2018 competition.
After Saturday, St. Thomas will race Nov. 16 in the NCAA regional in Waverly, Iowa. as it attempts to make a return trip to the national meet.
