Junior Ben Frazzini on Tuesday was named MIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week. It's the first such award for the newcomer, a native of Medina, Minn., and a graduate of Wayzata High.
Frazzini shot three-under-par 68 on Sunday to take medalist honors in a field of 120 players and lead No. 22-ranked St. Thomas to a two-stroke victory over Gustavus in the 13-school (18-team) SJU fall tournament.
This was the ninth victory in a multi-team tournament for Tommie Men's Golf since September 2017. The Tommies played even-par 284 on the day after shooting 10-over-par on a different course on Saturday.
A fall 2019 transfer from the Minnesota Gophers' squad, Frazzini helped Wayzata High claim two Minnesota high school state crowns. He has shot 73 or lower in five of his nine fall rounds, and his 73.1 average ranks fourth best among all conference players.
On Sunday, he took a three-shot win over GAC's Jacob Pedersen, who matched his 68 on Sunday. Frazzini birdied three of his first six holes on that final round and parred his way in, as he recorded 15 pars on the day.
In four tournaments so far (nine 18-hole rounds), the Tommies have recorded 18 scores of 71 or lower. That already equals the total for the 2018-19 team in 26 rounds.
Frazzini and his teammates played next weekend in the 54-hole Twin Cities Classic, then competes Oct. 5-6-7 in the MIAC Championships.
