St. Thomas Men's Golf closed Saturday's round strong and holds an eight-stroke lead at the halfway point of the 36-hole Pioneer Collegiate tourney in Maple Plain.

The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday.

The eight-team event also includes 27 Division I golfers playing as individuals. Their five-man varsity teams are competing in the Sunday-Monday Minnesota Gopher Invite at a nearby course.

The No. 22-ranked Tommies played their last four holes at four-under par and closed with a total of one-under 287. They go into Sunday eight shots ahead of second-place Manitoba (295) and nine ahead of No. 15-ranked St. John's (296).

St. Thomas' Emmet Herb used two late birdies to join teammate Ben Frazzini in a tie for 11th in a field of 93 individuals (tied for third among Division III players). Each Tommie shot two-under-par 70.

Peder Larson (73), Ben Kisla (74) and Miles McCarthy (76) rounded out the Purple lineup. Five other Toms played as individuals, led by 78s each from Sam Tollette and Michael Sauro.
