Arola, Sprangers lead Women's Track

The St. Thomas women's track and field team had two new NCAA provisional qualifying times, improved two provisional marks, and just missed two other provisional times at Wednesday's Tommie Twilight meet at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

Sophomore Nikki Arola hit an NCAA provisional time as she won the 400 meters in 57.05, and junior Erin Sprangers did the same as she won the 800 in 2:14.67. Arola also won the 200 meters in 25.68.

On a windy night, UST just missed provisional times in the 4x400 relay, which won in 3:56.60 (3:56.00 provo), and with Katie Theisen in the 400 hurdles in 64.64 (64.14 provo).

In the hammer, Shara Guidry (160-10) and Carol Comp (159-8) improved their NCAA provisional marks by eight feet and placed 1-2. Guidry also took third in the discus (148-7) and fifth in the shot put (42-6). Comp took seventh in the discus (134-11).

UST also got firsts from Kyley Crotty in the javelin (118-8); Jenna Ewing in the 100 meters (12.58); Laura Janas in the 100 hurdles (15.42); and Selina Dehn in the triple jump (36-6 1-4) and long jump (17-8). Dehn also tied for seventh in the high jump (5-1) and Ewing took seventh in the 200 (26.93). In the 5,000, Julie Anderson was second in 18:08.04 and Allie Metzler was fifth in 18:26.1. UST took second in the 4x100 relay (48.90) behind the Minnesota Gophers (48.03).

Other Tommie placewinners were Kate Staat, third in the 200 (26.39) and fifth in the 100 (12.86); Kelly Russ, fourth in the 1,500 (4:46.87); Alyssa Salomone, tied for third in the high jump; Melissa Kuebler, fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.52 prelims, 15.78 finals); Julianna Jorder, fourth in the long jump (16-8 1-2) and sixth in the triple jump (34-1 1-2); Raynee DeGrio, sixth in the 800 (2:20.09); Molly Demmer, eighth in the 400 (61.08); and Angela McGehee, tied for ninth in the pole vault (10-2 1-2); Felisha Willaert, eighth in the shot put (38-6 1-4); and Jenna Lewis, ninth in the discus (128-3).

The Toms will have some athletes at Friday's Hamline Invite and some at Saturday's Madison Twilight meet.
