Seniors Shara Guidry and Selina Dehn and junior Katie Theisen had NCAA provisional qualifying performances to lead the Tommie women's track and field team to third place out of 10 teams at Saturday's Wartburg Invitational in Waverly, Iowa.
In its first competition in five weeks, St. Thomas scored 129.1 points, just behind Division I Western Illinois (145.5) and Wartburg (133) and just ahead of UW-LaCrosse (118.7).
Dehn took second in the triple jump in 38-1 1-2, which currently ranks first in Division III. She also placed third in the high jump (5-1) and fourth in the long jump (17-7).
Guidry was second in the discus in a provisional mark of 136-8. She also just missed provisional standards in the hammer (third, 148-10) and shot put (third, 41-11 1-2).
Theisen won the 800 in 2:13.77 and was followed by teammates Erin Sprangers, third in 2:15.71, and Kelly Russ, fifth in 2:16.53. The provisional time in that event is 2:15.00.
Nikki Arola was first in the 200 (25.87) and third in the 400 (58.16). She also was on the 4x100 relay team that placed fifth in 49.51 with Jenna Ewing, Kate Staat and Shionna Evans. Arola anchored the 4x400 team that placed fourth in 3:58.50 with teammates Katie and Becky Theisen and Sprangers.
Anne Iddins took seocnd in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:41.50). Alyssa Salamone was second in the high jump (5-3). Carol Comp was fourth in the hammer (146-3). Julianna Gorder took fifth in the long jump (16-6). Ewing placed fifth in the 100 (12.85). Allie Metzler placed fifth in the 5,000 (18:39.44). Laura Janas took fifth in the 100 high hurdles (15.46).
The Toms are scheduled to compete next Saturday at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invite.
