Women's Track sails to Border Battle title

The St. Thomas women's track and field team won 12 events and cruised to first place out of four teams at Saturday's Minnesota-Wisconsin Border Battle hosted by UW-Stout. The Toms scored 212 points to top second-place Stout (149), third-place St. Olaf (122) and UW-Superior (105).

Carol Comp and Shara Guidry went 1-2 in both the shot put and weight throw. Guidry improved her NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw to 51-10 and threw 40-7 in the shot. Comp threw 41-1 1-2 in the shot and 52-11 in the weight throw, the latter under her previous provisional best of the season.

Katie Theisen's winning 600 time of 1:36.02 is UST's fastest since Tish Dusich's school-record time of 1:35.18 in 2001. Theisen also took second in both the long jump (16-5 1-4) and triple jump (36-5).

UST swept the relays, taking first in both the 4x200 (1:51.18) and 4x400 (4:10.98).

Selina Dehn won the long jump (16-8 1-2) and high jump (5-3); took second in the 200 (26.39); and took third in the triple jump (36-2 1-4).

Nikki Arola was first in the 200 (26.40) and 400 (59.77) and third in the 55 (7.66).

Other UST winners were Erin Sprangers in the 800 (2:18.17); Laura Janas in the 55 hurdles (8.77); and Jenna Ewing in the 55 dash (7.61).

Other seconds were scored by Anne Iddins in the 3,000 (11:06.69); Raynee DeGrio in the 800 (2:18.55); and Kate Staat in the 55 (7.62).

Other thirds were scored by Allie Metzler in the mile (5:32.54); Betsy Hupp in the 800 (2:29.62); Melissa Kuebler in the 55 hurdles (8.84); Alyssa Salomone in the high jump (5-1); and Britney Daniel in the pole vault (10-4 1-4).

UST will have some throwers and a distance-medley relay competing at Iowa State next weekend, and a few competing Saturday at St. Cloud State.
