St. Thomas had four NCAA indoor track and field provisional qualifying performances in a pair of weekend competitions.
For the second week in a row, Shara Guidry and Carol Comp broke the school mark in the weight throw. At the five-team St. Olaf meet, Comp threw 54-0 1-2 to shatter her own record and move into second best in the nation. At the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa, Guidry took third in a field of 31 with a personal-best toss of 51-3. Guidry also placed seventh of 31 in the shot put at 41-0 1-4, one inch shy of the NCAA provisional and 11 inches off Comp's school record. Comp threw 40-9 3-4 at St. Olaf.
Also at Iowa State, Katie Theisen and Kelly Russ placed second and fourth out of 43 entrants in the 800 meters. Theisen clocked 2:15.17 and Russ hit 2:16.64, both under the first indoor nationals standard of 2:16.90. Theisen's time was just 0.14 of a second off the Tommie indoor school record and 1.5 seconds off an automatic qualifying time to nationals.
Also at Iowa State, senior Julie Anderson was eighth of 27 in the 3,000 in 10:24.30 -- a time that ranks first in the conference thus far; and freshman Raynee DeGrio ran well in the 1000 and took third in 3:00.45.
At St. Olaf, Nikki Arola swept the 55 (7.57), 200 (27.35) and 400 (62.10) and ran on the winning 4x200 relay (1:53.99). Laura Janas won the 55 hurdles (8.88); Alyssa Salomone won the high jump (5-3); and Selina Dehn won the triple jump (35-6) and was second in the high jump (4-11). Julianna Gorder was second in both the long jump (15-7 1-2) and triple jump (32-7 3-4).
