Tommie junior Kia Johnson, a St. Paul native and St. Bernards High graduate, has been awarded a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. Approximately one-fourth of the 1,125 students nominated nationally are selected.

Johnson previously was announced as a recipient of a UNCF/Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship.
The UNCF/Merck award, given annually to just 15 students throughout the country, provides up to $25,000 to cover tuition, room and board, and other billable fees. A Biology major who holds one of the highest grade-point averages among UST student-athletes, Johnson works in the research lab of Tom Ippoliti in UST's Chemistry department.
In addition to the scholarship, Johnson will receive a Merck Summer Research Internship which includes a mentorship by a Merck scientist plus a stipend of at least $5,000. The first 10-week internship will take place during summer 2012 while the second to follow after her graduation in summer 2013.
