Ashley Maher capped a whirlwind senior volleyball season on Tuesday as she added Capital One Academic All-America honors to her previous AVCA All-America honors. Just 18 individuals from 441 Division III volleyball programs are honored on the elite team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Maher (SR-Hutchinson), who has a 3.85 grade-point average in Business and Marketing Management, was voted to the third team. She's one of just seven Division III players to make both Academic All-America and AVCA All-America. She was in her first year as a starter in 2011 after backing-up three-year All-America setter Emily Foster. Maher had 1,463 assists, and her 11.61 apg led all Division III setters.
Maher led the MIAC co-champion Tommies to a 32-5 record and a repeat trip to the national quarterfinals. St. Thomas has won CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 54 times over the last 11 years in 11 different sports.
