No. 29-ranked St. Thomas Women's Cross Country put four runners in the top 12 and 12 in the top 50 and won the 12-team MIAC championship Saturday at Como Golf Course in St. Paul.
It was the Tommies' first conference women's CC crown since 2008. Coach Joe Sweeney, now in his 37th season, claimed his 78th team championship in conference cross country or indoor and outdoor track and field.
The St. Thomas seniors improved their team finishes from seventh to third to second to first in their four seasons of MIAC cross country meets.
Junior Alex Fossum (22:48) took third in the 6,000-meter race in a field of 248 finishers.
Seniors Kayla Janto (23:19) and Bridget McGivern (23:21) placed 7-8, and junior Jenny Walz (23:32) placed 12th to help UST score 50 points. No. 25-ranked Carleton (67) and No. 34 St. Olaf (69) placed second and third.
Freshman Sara Ness (23:51) took 20th; freshman Grace Loeslie was 25th (24:02); Ali Glassbrenner was 29th (24:12); Katie Breuckman was 30th (24:15); Melissa Marsh took 31st (24:15); and Megan Gossfeld placed 34th (24:51).
The St. Thomas men placed fourth of 11 teams led by Trevor Smith's top-10 finish.
The Tommie women run Nov. 12 at the NCAA regional at Carleton.
