St. Thomas Track and Field has shifted gears as it begins preparation for the 2018 outdoor season. The teams will soon begin training on their new track surface on campus at O'Shaughnessy Stadium, following the summer 2017 renovation.
Both the Tommie men and women are scheduled to compete outdoors April 7 at the Hamline Invite to start the two-month competitive season. The MIAC Championships are scheduled for May 11-12 at Carleton College in Northfield, with the NCAA outdoor meet slated for La Crosse, Wis., May 24-26.
St. Thomas swept the men's and women's team championships at last month's MIAC Indoor Championships, and later advanced six athletes to the NCAA Indoor meet. On the women's side, the Tommies had three All-Americas with top-eight placings -- seniors Ali Glassbrenner (mile, fourth place) and Katie Murray (200, eighth place), and junior Grace Bordson (high jump, eighth place).
The St. Thomas men will get a boost with the return of fifth-year senior Connor O'Neill, a pole vault All-America honoree and MIAC champion hurdler. He concluded his indoor track and field eligibility in 2017 but has one outdoor season of eligibility remaining.
In six career MIAC championship meets indoors and outdoors, O'Neill has placed in the top eight 23 times in various events to score 127 points and help St. Thomas win all six team championships.
