Softball goes 3-1 in opening weekend

No. 14-ranked St. Thomas went 1-1 on Sunday at the Rochester Dome to cap a 3-1 weekend. The Toms beat Nebraska Wesleyan in five innings, 8-0, but were limited to four hits in a 4-2 loss to Coe.

The Toms allowed four runs in the third inning to fall to the Kohawks, 25-10 last seson. Coe later edged St. Catherine 4-3. Chase Shortly had an RBI single and Dana Connelly had a sac fly.

Jessica Eppenberger threw a one-hit shutout in the win over Nebraska Wesleyan. Jenna Bromen drove in three runs with a double and a single and Sarah Bueno had two hits.


Saturday story

No. 14-ranked St. Thomas Softball used a wild pitch to get one victory then rolled up 11 runs for a second win Saturday in non-conference play in Rochester, Minn.

Chase Shortly led the way as she went 6-for-7 with five doubles and also reached via two walks. She also drove in three runs.

UST opened its season with a 4-3, walk-off win over UW-La Crosse. A seventh-inning, two-out wild pitch scored the winning run. Jenna Beeso had pinch-hit single. Rachel Suter pinch ran and was bunted to second. She took third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

Shortly had three hits and an RBI to lead an eight-hit Tommie offense. Transfer Sammy Hogan worked 6 1-3 innings on the mound for the victory.

The Toms closed the day with an 11-3 defeat of Simpson. Shortly and Megan Bush each had three hits. Jessica Eppenberger worked 5 2-3 innings for the pitching win.

UST plays two games Sunday -- against Nebraska Wesleyan and Coe.
