Tommies fall to Blugolds 5-1, drop to 8-5-3 overall

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The St. Thomas men's hockey team fell to UW- Eau Claire by the final score of 5-1 on Saturday night at Hobbs Ice Arena.  With the loss, the Tommies fall to 8-5-3 on the year, while the Blugolds improve to 12-3-3 overall.

After a scoreless first period, UW-Eau Claire came out to score three unanswered goals in the second period and take a 3-0 lead to the second intermission.  Jake Bress opened the game's scoring with a goal as time expired on a power play opportunity. 

Two and a half minutes later, Patrick Moore followed that effort up with his 10th goal of the year to put Eau Claire on top 2-0.  Jesse Tredinnick added a third goal with 8:46 remaining in the second that gave the Blugolds to 3-0 lead headed to the third.

The Tommies got on the scoreboard in the opening minutes of the third period.  Michael Dockry scored his seventh goal of the season, thanks to assists from Joakim Broberg and D.J. Jones.

But UW-Eau Claire answered a minute and a half later with another goal to regain the momentum.  The Blugolds converted on another power play goal to add extra insurance and cap off the 5-1 win.

For the game, Eau Claire finished with a 24-22 shot advantage and converted on 2-of-4 power play chances, compared to an 0-for-2 mark for the Tommies. 

Ben Myers suffered the loss for the Purple, making 19 saves in the contest and dropping to 7-3-2 on the year.  Jay Deo tallied the win for the Blugolds in a 21 save effort.

St. Thomas will next take the ice at the Xcel Energy Center when it takes on UW-Stout as a part of Hockey Day in Minnesota at 1:30 pm on Saturday afternoon.
