St. Thomas Men's Basketball coach John Tauer has announced his 2017-18 schedule.
His Tommies will play nine of their first 11 games away from home. They open the season with two games Nov. 17-18 in the inaugural Great Lakes Invitational on the campus of Marietta (Ohio) College. UST opens its home season Nov. 29 against Concordia-Moorhead.
Joining the Tommies are the host Pioneers; Hope (Mich.); Mount St. Joseph (Ohio); Wittenberg (Ohio); Birmingham-Southern (Ala.), Dickinson (Pa.); and St. John Fisher (N.Y.).
All eight teams posted records of .500 or better last season, and four played in the NCAA tournament. St. Thomas lost on a buzzer beater in the first round to eventual runner-up Augustana (Ill.); St. John Fisher bowed out in the second round; and Marietta and Hope each made it to the Sweet 16 round.
Marietta, which closed the season ranked No. 9 in the national poll, has averaged 23 wins over the last seven seasons, just behind UST's 25-victory clip.
St. Thomas (19-8) graduated four seniors, led by All-America point guard Grant Shaeffer. The Tommies are expected to return nearly 65 percent of their scoring and 55 percent of their rebounding.
