Baseball drops 5-2 decision to Adrian

A pinch-hit bases-loaded triple keyed a five-run eighth inning as third-seed Adrian rallied for a 5-2 win over sixth-seed St. Thomas in Thursday's opening round of the NCAA regional baseball tourney in Whitewater, Wis.

The Tommies (26-17) play an elimination game Friday (1:15 p.m.) against Macalester, which fell 8-3 to Concordia-Chicago in the day's final game.

St. Thomas broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Jake Smith singled and was bunted to second. Sam Cobbs walked, and Sam Schneider's RBI single put UST ahead 1-0. The runners advanced on the throw home, and Cobbs scored on Hunter Hart's sac fly.

UST starter Henry DeCaster threw seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts, but allowed an infield hit, a double and an RBI single to start the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Zimmerman came on to pitch.

After a walk and a strikeout, Adrian went ahead 4-2 on a bases-clearing triple. An RBI single added an insurance run.

Smith and Joe Burnley had two hits apiece.
