Jake Smith and Sam Cobbs each had four hits and combined to drive in 11 runs on Monday as Tommie Baseball split two games at Macalester. UST won the opener 13-6 but lost game two 9-8 on a walkoff single in the ninth inning.
St. Thomas (15-10 overall, 8-2 MIAC) is now tied with Bethel for the conference lead as the Royals swept Carleton. St. John's split with Gustavus and is one game back at 7-3.
Mitch Larson allowed three earned runs and five hits in five innings with no walks and two strikeouts for the game-one victory.
Cobbs went 2-for-5 with three RBI in game one and had two hits and two RBI in the nightcap. Smith hit a three-run homer as the Tommies raced to a 10-2 lead and had three hits and three RBI in game two. Hunter Hart had two RBI in each game.
In the second game, UST rallied from 4-0 and 6-3 deficits to take an 8-6 lead, but the Scots used a two-run homer to tie the game in the eighth inning. Macalester turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the top of the ninth and keep the Toms from taking the lead, then used a walk, a sac bunt and an RBI single to walk off in the last of the ninth.
The Toms are scheduled to play two non-conference games Thursday at UW-La Crosse, and resume MIAC play with two Saturday at Carleton.
