Baseball sweep pushes win streak to four

Pitchers Henry DeCaster and Mitch Larson had strong starts in Tommie Baseball's 2-1, 8-1 MIAC sweep of visiting St. Olaf on a sunny Saturday at UST's Koch Diamond.

The Tommies (9-8 overall, 2-0 MIAC) are 4-0 over the last three days with an 0.60 earned-run average in sweeps of UW-Stout and St. Olaf.

St. Thomas starters have a 1.79 ERA over the last 10 contests.

DeCaster (3-1) worked 5.1 innings and had nine strike outs while allowing one run, six walks and four hits). Three UST pitchers combined to strike out 11 and strand 11 Ole baserunners in the opener. Ryan Zimmerman got the final four outs for his first save of the season, with two strikeouts.

The Toms made the most of four hits in six at-bats off St. Olaf staff ace Jake Mathison. Zach Gottfredsen scored both runs in game one after RBIs by Sam Cobbs and Sam Schneider.

In game two, Jake Smith hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning and joined Cobbs, Hunter Hart and Logan Kohorst with two hits apiece. Gottfredsen started a four-run first inning with an RBI double. Cobbs had an RBI triple, Hart added an RBI single and Rock Cates added an RBI single.

Larson struck out 10 and walked one while allowing five hits over eight innings. Alex Ogren pitched the ninth. Larson (2-1) won his second start in a row and extended his scoreless streak to 16 innings. He led 4-0 early and started a 1-2-3 doble play to end the Olaf third inning.

St. Thomas plays a pair Wednesday at Augsburg in MIAC action.
