No. 5-ranked UW-Whitewater used strong pitching and timely hitting in Thurday's 5-2, 10-1 sweep of St. Thomas in seven-inning non-conference baseball games played at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Warhawks (2-0) used 16 hits, six walks and seven hit batters to put steady pressure on the six Tommie pitchers who saw action.

Whitewater starters Austin Jones and Westin Wuethrich combined to allow three runs and four hits in 10 2-3 innings while striking out 15 and walking six.

Jake Smith scored all three runs for the Tommies with a game-one triple and a leadoff home run in game two. Sam Cobbs had a pair of RBI singles, and Hunter Hart had an RBI double.

UST used three walks to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one and bring the winning run to the plate, but Smith flied out to end the game.

Tommie game two starter Ryan Zimmerman retired the first eight batters he faced. But he allowed four earned runs in four innings despite striking out seven.

The Tommies (1-2) play two games Saturday at 10 p.m. in U.S. Bank against Wartburg.
