Baseball wins opener, leads suspended game

Junior Ryan Zimmerman struck out seven and allowed just two runs in a seven-inning complete-game win as St. Thomas opened its 2017 baseball season with a 6-2 win over UW-Stevens Point Tuesday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

It was the first start in 21 career appearances for Zimmerman, the Tommies' closer in 2016.

Chad Clute and Zach Gottfredsen each had two hits for UST, which rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

In game two, the home Tommies lead 7-3 in a game halted by time limit in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out and one UST runner on base. The seven-inning game will resume at that point in Florida when both teams are there on spring trips March 18-24.

Sophomore transfer Henry DeCaster started on the mound in his UST debut, and he struck out five and allowed three runs and four hits in five innings. Nine different Toms had their nine hits, with Clute slicing a two-run double and Cobbs adding a two-run single.
