Softball sprints to 9-3 win in NCAA playoff opener

The No. 18-ranked Tommie softball team pounded 14 hits and ran its season win streak to 30 with Thursday's 9-3 win over UW-Eau Claire (29-14) in the NCAA Regional Tournament in Eau Claire, Wis.

The Tommies, who secured the program's eighth consecutive 40-win season, advance to a 6:30 p.m. Friday second-round game against Ripon, a 4-2 winner over UW-River Falls.

In the day's other first-round games, Luther scored a 3-0 victory over St. Scholastica, and UW-LaCrosse edged North Central (Ill.) 2-1.

Freshman Jenna Hoffman homered and singled and drove in two runs. Emily Gregory, Megan Sitek and Becky Eischens each had two hits and two RBI, and Sydney Marquardt and Erica Wilson each had two hits.

Biz Sitzmann pitched into the sixth inning and allowed just two earned runs.
