May 14, 2011
Little went right for 18th-ranked St. Thomas in Saturday's 11-2, five-inning loss to No. 4-ranked Luther in the NCAA regional softball playoffs in Eau Claire, Wis.
The Tommies (41-5) had a 31-game win streak halted and now need to win three elimination games to win the regional. They play a noon elimination game Sunday against the Ripon-UW-River Falls winner. If they win that game, they will play Luther at 2:30 p.m., and would need to beat Luther again on Monday.
The Norse ( 40-4) advance to the championship round and need one win Sunday or Monday to advance to the College World Series. Luther struck for three runs in the first and four more in the second. The Norse had 10 hits and took advantage of seven walks, a hit batsman and an error.
UST left nine runners on base in their five at-bats. Genny Duffy's two run double in the fourth inning to snap the shutout. Chandran Duffy, Kayla Boward and Becky Eischens each had two hits.
