St. Thomas won the debut match in the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex with Saturday's 5-4 victory over UW-LaCrosse.
St. Thomas, playing without three top players due to injuries and a family emergency, swept the doubles with close victories and won at Nos. 5-6 singles. The Eagles pulled out close matches at Nos. 1-4 singles but fell just short.
Kevin Walker and Peter Wright won in singles and doubles for the Tommies.
LaCrosse was 18-6 last season and is regionally ranked.
The Tommies (1-0) play next Sunday Feb. 13 at home against St. Cloud State (2 p.m.)
