Men's Golf holds lead into final day at MIAC meet

The Tommie men's golf team zipped into first place in Sunday's second round at the 2011 MIAC Golf Championships in Coon Rapids. The 54-hole tournament finishes Monday on the Bunker Hills layout.

Player picSt. Thomas started the day one stroke behind first-day leader St. Olaf. But Coach Scott Proshek's Tommies (302-293/595) now lead the Oles (301-300/601) by six strokes and lead tourney favorite St. John's 308/295/603) by eight shots.

Bethel (609), Gustavus (611) and Concordia (620) are also looking for top-three places in the 10-team event.

For the Tommies, Brian Parkhurt had the tournament's low round with a 70 on Sunday and is tied for first individually with St. Olaf's Justin Volling at 147. Freshman Alex Kapraun sits in third place at 75-73/148; John Young is tied for sixth at 75-75/150; freshman Bennett Schroeder is tied for eighth at 75-76/151; and Michael Mortenson shot 76-82/158 and is tied for 30th.

St. Olaf (301), St. Thomas (302), Bethel (304) hold the top three spots. St. John's, Gustavus and Concordia (each 308) are in close striking distance in the 10-team event.

For the Tommies, Alex Kapraun and John Young each shot 75 and are tied for fourth in the field of 50 players. Michael Mortenson and Bennett Schroeder each shot 76 and are tied for seventh. Brian Parkhurst shot 77.
