
The No. 2-ranked St. Thomas baseball team (34-8) received the top-seed for an eight-team double-elimination regional tournament that starts this Wednesday in Whitewater, Wis. UST received an at-large berth to the 56-team tournament.
It's the second year in a row the Tommies will travel to Whitewater, Wis. It's the 17th time in 18 years UST baseball will play in the regional tourney, with all 17 trips to Wisconsin.
St. Thomas, UW-LaCrosse, North Park (Ill.), UW-Whitewater, Concordia (Ill.), St. Scholastica, Aurora (Ill.) and St. Norbert (Wis.) are the Nos. 1-8 seeds in the Whitewater bracket.
Thus UST will face St. Norbert (26-11) in the 1-8 matchup at 1 p.m. LaCrosse plays Aurora at 7 p.m., North Park vs. St. Scholastica plays at 4 p.m., and Whitewater vs. Concordia plays at 10 a.m..
MIAC playoff champ St. John's (29-14) will fly to McMinnville, Ore., to play in a six-team regional.
The Tommies went 3-2 in the MIAC playoffs including a 4-2, 10-inning loss to St. Mary's to start the weekend. After losers' bracket wins over Bethel, St. Mary's and St. John's they lost the rematch to the Johnnies 10-5. UST went 22-3 against conference opponents this season.
St. Thomas has played three of the regional opponents early in the season -- it swept St. Scholastica in two one-run decisions; and split with LaCrosse and Whitewater.
