Baseball's Maher gets MIAC weekly honor

The Tommies Steve Maher has emerged as the staff ace after transferring from Iowa Central. Maher leads the MIAC in wins (5) and sports a 1.11 ERA.

Tommie sophomore RHP Steve Maher was named MIAC Pitcher of the Week for all games in February and March.

Maher has won all five of his 2012 starts, vs. St. Scholastica, Whitewater, Oshkosh, Stevens Point and the University of U Chicago. He is 5-0 with a 1.11 ERA in 32.1 innings and 31 strikeouts and just five walks while holding foes to .188 BA. He has three complete games. He shutout top-10 ranked UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater. A transfer from Iowa Central CC, Maher attended Illinois State but redshirted as a freshman in 2010 season.

The Tommies also moved up in the national rankings this week. The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) has UST ranked #10, the highest ranking of any team in the Midwest, and D3 Baseball ranked the Tommies #13 overall.

Chris Olean's Tommies will be back in action this weekend against conference rival the Hamline Pipers, in a scheduled double-header to open the MIAC regular season at the Metrodome. First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM.
